Theme: UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF THE CHURCH (2)
__________________________________________
Topic:
THE HEAD AND BODY OF THE CHURCH
TEXTS: Colossions.3: 18, Eph.1: 22, 1Cor.12: 1-31
Memory Verse:
And he is head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Col.3: 18
THE HEAD: He is the head of the body, the church. ˇ°Christ is the foundation, cornerstone, and head of His church .He is head of the local church, and He is head of the church in its all-inclusive broader sense, or what is known as ˇ°the universal churchˇ± including all born again, blood-washed, Spirit-baptized believers in heaven and earth. He is ˇ°head Over all things to the churchˇ± (Eph. 1:22), the only absolute and final authority.
THE BODY: The church is more than a religious organization; it is an organism, with Christ as the living head. It is alive with the life of Christ made living in each member
Let us examine briefly the church and observe its role as the body of Christ." (1Cor.12: 1-31)
- The members of the body are given spiritual gifts according to the will of the Holy Spirit (verses1-11).
- The unity of the body is seen in its many members with different operations all related and coordinated under one Head (verse12).
- All are baptized by one Spirit into one body (verse13).
- There is one Holy Spirit.
- There is one Holy Spirit baptism.
- There is one body (the church.).
This is the church in its broadest sense. You cannot join this church .The only way to become a member of His body is to be spiritually born John3: 1-7) and baptized into it by the Holy Spirit.
- The members differ one from the other, yet they function as one in the will of God (1Cor.12: 14-18).
- The least or weakest member is necessary for the proper function of the whole body (verses22, 23).
- If one member suffers, the whole body suffers; if one is honored, all are honored (verse 26).
- The members are to desire the best spiritual gifts and minister in love, verse31.
