CHURCH BUILDING PROJECTS (1)
TEXTS: HAGGAI 1:2-14, 2:4-9, Zach4:6-9
Memory Verse: "Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house, and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the Lord. Haggai 1:8"
INTRODUCTION:
There is no better word that describes the attitude of most Christians today than ¡°Self Centeredness¡± especially when it comes to doing the work of God. A Certain Ibo adage opines that a goat owned by the public goes hungry and grows lean because it is not one man¡¯s responsibility to feed it.Regratebly, this is the same attitude and mentality many us still have when we are doing the work of God; by allowing the negative and unconcerned attitude of others to influence us and discourage our zeal for the house of the LORD.
From our main text, we see a similar attitude of negligence and unnecessary delay displayed by the Children of Israel in rebuilding the temple of God that was lying in ruins, for which the Prophet Haggai reproves the people, and particularly their ruler and high priest, telling them that their, neglect was the cause of their having been visited with unfruitful seasons, and of divine displeasure as seen in vs. 1-11.He encourages them to set about the work, and on their doing so ,promises that God will be with them vs12-15.
Study:
- What was the reason why the children of Israel left the house of God lying in ruins or waste while dwelling in their own finished houses? Haggai 1:2. Do people give similar reasons today?
- What was God¡¯s reaction to this attitude? Haggai 1:7-8
- What are the consequences of abandoning the house of God for our personal comforts, conveniences and pleasures? Haggai 1:9-11,Deut 28:23
- What is God¡¯s promise to those who will rise and build? Haggai 2:4-5,Zach4:6-9
- In which ways can we go up to the mountain and bring wood to build the house of God today. Ezra3: 7,2Kings 12:11
CONCLUSION:
Now is the time to begin to work for the Lord, because now is the acceptable time and the day of salvation. May the Lord stir up our spirits to begin to build as He did to Zerubbabel the son of Sheatiel, governor of Judah and Joshua the son of Josedech the high Priest, and the all the remnant of the people, and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of hosts their God.Haggai 1:14
May God help us in Jesus name Amen!
