2 Peter 1:5-10
Memory Verse: "These are the qualities you need, and if you have them in abundance, they will make you active and effective in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if you do not have them, you are so short sighted that you cannot see and have forgotten that you have been purified from your past sins. 2Pet 1:8-9 TEV"
INTRODUCTION:
Our faith in Christ is the foundation of our belief and relationship with God. For us to be productive and fruitful in our Christian living, we are expected to grow or increase in the faith. That is why 2Pet1:5-10 put down a list of qualities and Christian virtues that every Christian should add to their faith in Christ. KNOWLEDGE is number two in that list. The question then is: What is Knowledge?
Knowledge in this context has been defined as the true wisdom, by which our faith is increased and our courage directed and preserved from weakening. The Greek word translated knowledge is gnosis which means insight, understanding. Spiritual knowledge therefore could also be defined as divine insight or understanding in the things of the spirit. In 1Cor14:20 the bible commands us to be men in understanding (the things of the spirit) Knowledge is opposite of ignorance. God says in Hosea4:6 ¡°My people perish for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you shall be no priest to me: seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your Children¡±.
From this scripture we could see the grave danger of lack of knowledge; it destroys God¡¯s people and disqualifies them from being entrusted with spiritual gifts and responsibility when they forget the law or the word of God. Seeking to grow in knowledge of God and His word as a Christian brings favour, acceptance and freedom from God; e.g. In John 8:32, the bible says¡± you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.¡±
Truth in itself does not set free but the knowledge of it does. It is the truth you discover and understand in the word of God and act upon that sets you free. Therefore every Child of God should aspire to add more and more knowledge to their faith in Christ, even the knowledge to those things that have been freely given to us in Christ Rm8:32.
Study:
- 1. The fruit of our knowledge of Christ can manifest as the spirit of wisdom and revelation Eph1:17.
2. Knowledge is understanding what the will of God is in any situation of life Eph5:17
3. Comment on Phil 1:9 ¡°And this I pray that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and (in) all judgment.
4. We are to be filled with knowledge of the will of God in all wisdom and spiritual understanding Col1:9
5. When we are filled with all knowledge(of His will), we will be able to admonish one another Rm15:14
6. Husbands should dwell with their wives according to knowledge giving honour unto the wife as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life that their prayers be not hindered 1Pet 3:7. Comment on this instruction.
CONCLUSION:
As a Christian you can have zeal of God but it must be guided and directed by knowledge consider Rm10:2 ¡°For I bear them, record that they have zeal of God but not according to knowledge.¡± May the Lord help us in Jesus name? Let us pray.
May the Lord help us to be his obedient
children in Jesus name. Amen?
