Theme:QUALITIES OF FRUITFUL GROWTH IN (THE KNOWLEDGE OF) OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST (III)
    __________________________________________

    Topic:
    TEMPERANCE

    TEXT: 2 Peter 1:5-10

    Memory Verse:
"These are the qualities you need, and if you have them in abundance, they will make you active and effective in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if you do not have them, you are so short sighted that you cannot see and have forgotten that you have been purified from your past sins. 2Pet 1:8-9 TEV"

    INTRODUCTION:
The Oxford advance learners dictionary defines ¡°temperance¡± as (a) the practise of not drinking alcohol because of your moral or religious beliefs.
    (b) The practise of controlling your behaviour; the amount you eat etc so that it is always reasonable.

In (a) we see ¡°abstinence¡± and in (b) we see ¡°Moderation¡±. The Greek word for temperance is ¡°egkrateia¡±, which the American standard revised version translated ¡°self control ¡°and some other translations as ¡°self-mastery¡±, ¡°self-restraint¡±.

Temperance or self control however is neither limited to abstinence nor moderation, rather it is the power and decision to abstain or to be moderate for the purpose of achieving an aim or with reference to some fixed end.

For us Christians, temperance or self control is very important because it helps us to concentrate and focus on one end of doing God¡¯s will in and through whatever calling God calls us; and to reject everything wholly or to whatever degree necessary, however innocent or useful it may appear, that interferes with our highest efficiency in this calling 1Cor.10:31

    Study:
  • ¡°Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God (KJV) see also Col.3:17, 1Pet 4:11 comment on 1Cor8:13 as regards temperance.
    1. How did Joseph exercise temperance, self control or self-restraint in the presence of his brethren when they appeared before him as suppliants? Gen 43:31.
    2. Temperance is a fruit of a spirit led life Gal 5:22-23.
    3. Explain Phil4:5 ¡°Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
    4. Explain what you understand by the statement in 1Cor 9:25¡± And every man that strived for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible¡± (KJV) 1Tim6:12, 2Tim 2:5, 2Tim 4:7, Rev.3:11.
    5. Define temperance within the context of 1Cor 10:31.

    CONCLUSION:
Temperance or self control is necessary in every area of our lives; whether in speech or judgment, as well as what appeals to sense. It is a proper inner spiritual virtue, that works into the outward life and it is in capable of being counterfeited or replaced by any abstinence limited to that which external.
May the Lord help us to be his obedient children in Jesus name. Amen?
