2 Peter 1:5-10
Memory Verse: "These are the qualities you need, and if you have them in abundance, they will make you active and effective in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if you do not have them, you are so short sighted that you cannot see and have forgotten that you have been purified from your past sins. 2Pet 1:8-9 TEV"
INTRODUCTION:
There are qualities God expects us as Christians to possess to show that we are fruitfully growing in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Pet 1:5-7, catalogue these qualities, verse8-9 clearly state that we need them all and in abundance too, to make us active and effective or fruitful in our knowledge of Jesus Christ.
It goes on to warn that if we don¡¯t have them it means we are short sighted and cannot see and have forgotten that we have been purified from our past sins. Today we are going to study about the first quality which is VITURE or Goodness. We pray that the Holy Spirit will open our eyes of understanding to see why we need these qualities now more than ever in Jesus¡¯ name!
Study:
- MEANING:
1. VIRTUE or Goodness as some translations put it literally means moral goodness; which is the practice of moral duties and abstaining from vice, or living in conformity to the moral law. Virtue or goodness in this literal sense of the meaning, must be distinguished from Christian Virtues because it only refers the practice of moral duties that merely come from motives of convenience or from compulsion or from regard to reputation; Where as virtue as used in this context of the scripture refers to Christian Virtues or goodness which is the practice of moral duties that come from sincere and genuine love to God and His word.
a. For our faith in Christ to be true and genuine it has to go along with good works by which it is evidenced. Let us see James 2:14-26
b. Virtue or goodness is a good quality of character and behavior. It is rather unfortunate that the character and behavior of many believers in Christ today are nothing to write home about for which our gospel is being mocked by unbelievers. We have to understand that anointing with out good character or behavior is nothing but nuisance. Let us see Phil3:17-18,1Te have to im4:12, Titus2:6-10, 1Pet 2:12, 1Tim6:1
CONCLUSION:
According to 2pet 1:3, the calling we have in Christ is unto glory and VIRTUE OR GOODNESS. Therefore we cannot afford to live exemplary Christian lives without their manifestations. Many God help us in Jesus name Amen!
