THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
TEXTS: :Eph 6:17b, Heb4:12, Ps119:11, Ja1:22-25, Eph5:26, Mtt4:1-11
Memory Verse:
And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is the word of God. Eph6:17"
INTRODUCTION:
The sword was an essential part of the armour of an ancient soldier. His other weapons were the bow, the spear, or the battle-axe. But, without a sword, no soldier would have regarded himself as well armed. The ancient sword was short, and usually two edged, and resembled very much a dagger.
The sword of the spirit is the sword which the Holy Spirit furnishes; it is the truth which he has revealed which is the word of God. The word of God is what God has spoken, His truth and promises.
LET'S LOOK AT THE NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD OF GOD:
- The word of God is living.
It does not die, or fade, it is forever the same. Matt24:35. it is forever settled in heaven Ps119:89
- It is powerful and active.
Heb4:12
- As a sharp sword, it has dividing power more than that of any double edged sword, in that it cuts through the layers of the soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow bringing every hidden thing (layer by layer) to light. It judges or discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart. It will separate man from sin (Ps119:11), or sin will separate man from it. Isa59:2
- The word of God has reflecting power as a mirror James1:22-25
- The word of God has cleansing power as water Eph5:26, Ps51:2
- The word of God has reproductive power as seed 1Pet1:23. We are children of God, because we have been born into God¡¯s family by the incorruptible seed of God¡¯s word.
- The word of God has nourishing power as food 1Pet2:2. It is the food for the soul. No Christian can remain strong in the Lord without studying the word of God.
- The word of God has healing power Ps107:20, Mtt8:8
(g) The word of God has power to resist and overcome temptations of the devil. Mtt4:1-11
This is the weapon our Lord Jesus used to resist the tempter in the wilderness. If we must stand firm and resist the devil and over come him, we must arm our selves with the truth of God¡¯s word. We must therefore.
CONCLUSION:
In Matt4:4, 7, 10 Jesus stood against the tempter with God¡¯s word and foiled his plots. So we too should stand against devils temptation with the simple declarations of God¡¯s word (the Bible). But the moment we leave that and begin to parley with Sin, we are gone. It is like a soldier who throws his sword away and tries to fight against his enemy with his naked hands.
