Topic:
THE HELMET OF SALVATION
(Defensive Amour)
TEXTS: Eph6:17, 1Thess 5:8, 1sa 59:17
Memory Verse: "But let us, who are of the day, be sober,
putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet,
the hope of salvation. 1Thess 5:8"
INTRODUCTION:
The helmet of the Grecian and the Roman warrior was made of thick leather
or brass, fitted to the head, and was usually crowned with a plume, or crest,
as an ornament. It was used to guard the head from a blow by a sword,
a war¨Cclub or a battle axe. And if the head of a soldier under attack
could be protected from the terrible blows of such dangerous weapons,
it meant, his hope of survival, victory or salvation greatly hung around it.
In Eph 6:17a St Paul says ¡°And take the helmet of salvation¡±. He did not breakdown the relationship or the connection between the helmet and salvation but looking at its parallel expression in 1Thes 5:8b, which says ¡°and as an helmet, the hope of salvation¡±, we discover that the idea is that a well-found hope of salvation in a Christian¡¯s life will preserve him as a Christian soldier in the day of spiritual conflict, and will guard him from the blows which an enemy would strike. Job19:25-26, Micah7:8
The helmet defended the head, a vital part of the body; and so the hope that victory, deliverance and salvation will finally come one day will keep the soul, and keep it from the blows of the enemy. In other wards, we Christian soldiers could not contend with our foes, without the hope of this final salvation by which we are sustained and fearlessly fight; knowing that the battle is ¡°fixed¡±, when a battle or a fight is fixed, it means that the winner and the looser have been determined even before the fight begins so whether the enemy likes it or not he must loose the battle, in fact he has lost it already in your life in Jesus name! Rom8:37-39, Isaiah54:15-17
This (helmet) hope of salvation is the hope of continual safety and protection, built on the promises of God to which a Christian believes he has right to claim. Ps27:1, Ps18:28-35, Ps91:
This helmet protects our understanding from being darkened and our judgments from being confused by the temptation and subtle argument of Satan. Jer29:11, 1Sa 55:8-9, Rm8:28
This is the hope of conquering every adversary and surmounting every difficulty by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimonies. Rev12:11
CONCLUSION:
Helmet is to an earthly soldier what salvation is to the soul
of a Christian soldier. It saves his soul from the dominion of sin
and Satan and assures him that faithful is He who has called him and
who would certainly fulfill what He has promised. 1Thes5:24.
May God help us in Jesus name Amen!
