    Topic:
    THE BREAST PLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
    (Defensive Amour)

    TEXTS: : Eph 6:14, 1Pet 2:24, 1Jn 2:29, Ps 15:2, Heb 1:9, Ps 45:7, Dan 12:3

Memory Verse: "Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people. Prov14:34"

    INTRODUCTION:
Another name for breast plate is coat of mail as we see in 1Sam17:5 or a habergeon as seen in Neh4:16 or bullet proof in contemporary language. It is the armour that covered the body from the neck to the thighs, and consisted of two parts, one covering the front and the other the back. It was made of rings, or in the form of scale, or plates, so fastened together that they would be flexible, and yet protect the body from a sword, spear, or arrow. We are told that Goliath¡¯s coat of mail or breastplate weighed five thousand shekels of brass or 57kg. It was often formed of plate of brass, laid one upon another, like the scales of a fish.

.Of righteousness: Righteousness means, right standing with God, integrity, holiness, purity of life, sincerity of piety.
The breast plate defended the vital parts of the body; and the idea here may be, that a Christian¡¯s right standing with God, integrity of life, and righteousness of character, is as necessary to defend him from the assaults of Satan, as the breast plate was to preserve the heart from the arrows of an enemy. It is true that no one can successfully meet the power of temptation without standing right with God, just as a soldier could not defend himself against an enemy without a breastplate. When a Christian lacks integrity, it will expose him to the assaults of the enemy just as a soldier would be whose breast plate was defective.

For example, the breast plate of the king of 1sreal was defective or faulty and because of this he was smitten by an arrow sent from a bow, ¡°between the joints of his harness¡±, or the ¡°breast plate¡± I king22:34; many Christians who think they are putting on their breastplate are smitten in the same way because of some defects in their character, lack of integrity and unguarded moments in their lives. Where ever the enemy sees a loop hole that will surely be the point of his attack. So David was tempted to commit the enormous sins that stain his memory, and Peter to deny his Lord.

So it happened to Judas through his avarice because he lacked the armour of righteousness; in the same way, some ministers of the gospel who lack integrity in a simple point, have been tempted and have fallen. We need righteousness which God alone can give-the righteousness of God our savior¡to make us perfectly invulnerable to all the arrows of the enemy.

    Let us look at other things the bible said about "righteousness";

  • We have died to sin and should start living for righteousness 1Pet2:24b

  • He that must dwell in the presence of God must work righteousness Ps15:2

  • If we believe God and His faithful promises, it will be accounted to us for righteousness for so Abraham did and it was accounted to Him for righteousness Rm4:16

  • We are to present the members of our body as instruments of righteousness to God. Rm6:13

  • By believing in Christ we gentiles have attained to righteousness even the righteousness of faith Rm9:30

  • With our heart we believe unto righteousness and with our mouth confession is made unto salvation Rm10:10

  • For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost Rm14:17

  • We are of God in Christ Jesus who became for us wisdom from God-and righteousness and sanctification and redemption 1Cor1:30

  • In all things we commend our selves as ministers of God - by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left 2Cor6:7

  • As believers, the righteousness we have is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith. Phil3:9

  • Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament and those who turn many to righteousness, like stars for ever and ever Dan12:3

    CONCLUSION:
Proverbs 14:34 says that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people. Righteousness exalts a Christian and places him in a place of honor and respects above all his contemporaries for so it exalted Jesus the son of the living God above all His fellows. Read Heb1:9, Ps45:7 Righteousness shall establish you and move you far from oppression, fear and terror. Isa54:14
May God help us to begin to live, work and walk in righteousness in Jesus name Amen!
